General Info

Tucked away in the welcoming village of Oughtibridge, Purple Lobster has built a solid reputation as a go-to fish and chips restaurant at 145 Langsett Rd S, Sheffield S35 0GY, United Kingdom. From the moment you arrive, the place feels relaxed and unfussy, the kind of local spot where quality food and genuine service come first. With convenient parking and a wheelchair-accessible car park, getting here is easy and stress-free, whether you’re stopping by for a quick takeaway or a laid-back bite.

The menu keeps things focused, which is exactly what works. Classic fish and chips are done properly, with crisp batter and flaky fish that feels freshly cooked every time. One of the standout choices is the fish and chips with curry, where the rich, warming sauce adds comfort without overpowering the main dish. Alongside that, fried shrimp brings a satisfying crunch, ideal for sharing or enjoying as a main if you’re in the mood for something a little different. Large chips are generous and golden, making them perfect for pairing with almost anything on the menu.

Small plates add flexibility, especially if you like variety. Guacamole offers a fresh contrast to the fried options, while a cold juice on the side keeps the meal balanced and refreshing. Everything feels thoughtfully prepared, not rushed, which really shows in both flavour and presentation. Credit cards are accepted, making the whole experience smooth from start to finish.

Service here is friendly and straightforward. Orders are taken efficiently, and the takeaway option is particularly popular with locals who want quality food without a long wait. Even during busier times, the atmosphere stays calm, and the team keeps things moving without sacrificing care. Reviews often mention consistency, and that’s exactly what you notice-reliable portions, familiar flavours, and a menu that doesn’t try to be anything it’s not.

What really makes this location stand out is how comfortably it fits into the community. It feels like a neighbourhood diner where regulars are remembered and newcomers are welcomed just as warmly. Whether you’re grabbing fried shrimp and chips to go, or sitting down with fish and chips and curry for a relaxed meal, Purple Lobster delivers an experience that feels honest, satisfying, and easy to come back to.

“ This high end fish & chip shop must be tried everything is just bang on ! Fish & chips are fantastic and their fishcakes you won’t find or taste better anywhere! ”

“ One of the most fanciest fish and chips shops i been to in the city! Ordered a mini fish and chips for £5.90... which is a steal nowadays! Inky available before 3pm though.. and sine days they'll close for a few hours from 2pm. Got a free potatoes scollop as they was about to clsoe when I ordered.. the chips were chunky and all looked perfect.. abit wierd as you would normally get a few crappy chips.. these were all perfect. Fish was nice and potato scollop was good.. Only thing I wasnt very keen on was the curry sauce was abit bland but it was okay just not great. They have a restaurant/sit down area... not loads of seats but does look very cosy here.. alot of attention to detail has gone into this place. They have hands towel in the bathroom to dry your hands off with. 1 basket with frsh hand towels and another below for the dirty 1s... never seen his before anywhere and thought it was a great idea. Will 100% be back for lunch when I'm working in the area! ”

“ High quality fish and chips, very reasonably priced for the portion sizes. The staff were friendly and efficient too. I find the batter from a lot of places is sloppy and under-cooked. Not here - it was light and crispy. Delicious! ”

“ Fabulous as ever! The Purple Lobster in Oughtibridge is definitely the best chippy for miles around. It’s always busy but it’s always service with a smile and they do gluten free Wednesdays and Saturdays. We had gluten free chips and sausages tonight and ate in and it was excellent. ”

“ I rang today to see if they do gluten free every day and he said no just wednesday and Saturday and what was it that I wanted. I asked him if he did gf sausage and he says does but they have ran out but because its my first time trying there he would go and get some sausage and make me some. The gf food was amazing the chips just tasted like proper chips and the scollop was amazing too as I haven't had gf batterd sausage from a chippy in 13yrs or a gf scollop. The guy who answered the phone was so friendly and jolly. Im definitely going back there in future. Only thing that was wrong with my food was that there was too much food for me, but thats not really a negative its just that my belly cant take much food ”

“ Our visit was a Thursday lunchtime. It was very quite. I ordered 2 lunchtime specialise fish, chips, curry sauce (choice of mushy peas, gravy, curry) £5.70 each. Generous portion of chips, fish was adequate, served in a polystyrene type container with lid. Tasted very nice. The shop was immaculately clean and modern. Our order was cooked for us so fresh. Couple of high tables and high stools available. Closed off was a proper seating area....looked like maybe 6 or 7 tables each with 4 upholstered seats. The owner was very friendly chatty. We would certainly go again and absolutely recommend. ”

“ This was our 3rd or 4th time visiting our most local chippy and sadly, the past couple of times we have been left feeling rather disappointed. The staff are nice and friendly enough - only reason for not giving 5 stars was the two ladies working yesterday evening were more focussed on finishing their personal conversation than coming to serve a waiting customer whilst I was waiting for our order. The batter was tasty and the curry sauce too, not too peppery but a nice warmth to it. The biggest let down yet again was the chips. Either they are being blanched and not being left to rest long enough or the temperature is not high enough when the potatoes are being put in the fryers (or both). They were soggy (yet not quite fully cooked on the inside) and very greasy (soaked all the way through 3 layers of paper) and the flavour was very much like the oil wasn’t fresh enough. Sadly because of this, we will be trying out somewhere else next time. ”
